Eminem began trending this week when several Gen Z creators on TikTok attempted to cancel the Detroit rapper for past controversial lyrics. Friday, the wordsmith shared the new lyric video for his song “Tone Deaf,” appearing to address his juvenile naysayers.
“I won’t stop even when my hair turns grey (I’m tone-deaf) / ‘Cause they won’t stop until they cancel me,” read the song’s hook.
Em goes on to jokingly blame his alter-ego, Slim Shady, for his most uproarious bars while cementing he will never change his artistry due to public pressure. Supporters who grew up on the MC also came to his defense.
“Cancel culture targets Eminem… good luck with that. Pretty sure ppl been trying to cancel him since ‘My Name Is’ dropped on MTV. That’s hilarious,” wrote one fan, with another adding, “Gen Z tryna cancel eminem? For controversial lyrics? Bro his music is so old. He’s made his music, leave the man alone. Y’all wanna get on him for controversial lyrics but y’all don’t say s–t about anyone else. What about tekashi 69? Y’all need to cancel him.”
Young TikTokers have taken issue with several of the artist’s past songs, including Rihanna collaboration, “Love the Way You Lie,” arguing that it glorifies toxic relationships and domestic violence.
