Eminem Drops 'Rap God'

It seems Kanye West isn’t the only rapper who thinks he’s God these days.

Eminem does too, which explains why he titled his latest single “Rap God.”

In the just-released six-minute-plus track, Eminem surveys his competition in the hip-hop world and, comparing himself to all others he concludes, “I’m beginning to feel like a rap God.”

Luckily, for him he’s also performing like one.

Say what you will about the song’s homophobia, woman-bashing, and lust for violence - and it’s got scads of all three - ‘Em’s flow couldn’t be more divine.

Playing off a mocking synth hook, and mid-tempo beat, the MC runs rings around both, offering counter-rhythms that could make most other MCs tie their tongues in defeat.

It’s not just speed Em offers. He’s both exploiting his consciously offensive persona and satirizing it. He’s also staking his claim as a major player on the rap scene ever since Clinton was in office - an era he references with a nicely crude shout-out to Monica Lewinski.

Em also challenges those who’ve labeled his music pop, just because he’s super-popular, and stands up to those who make assumptions about him based on his race.

The song, released Tuesday, rates as the third cut previewed from Eminem’s upcoming album, “The Marshall Mathers LP 2,” out November 5th.

It will be his first full solo work in three years, since 2010’s “Recovery.” The CD’s title refers back to the thirteen-year-old “Marshall Mathers LP.”

The new song revives the super-sick humor of that era, which comes as a relief after all the internalizations and ruminating of Em’s more recent work.

As a single, “Rap God” offers a promising tease for a disc primed to go head to head with Kanye’s terrific new one, revealing who deserves rap’s latest lordly title.
