IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

Is that thing forked?

Ramando Juquain Hughes did his best snake impression in his mugshot when he stuck out his tongue following an arrest for stealing four of the slippery serpents at knifepoint in Waco, Texas.

It was part of a four-county crime spree for Hughes, who allegedly terrorized his victims with a wooden bat and knife and led police on a high-speed chase.

Hughes, 24, was indicted Wednesday on two enhanced counts of aggravated robbery after the February incident.

Hughes, of Killeen, started his crime spree by stealing a pickup truck in his town, police say. He went on to a local store, allegedly assaulting a clerk with a wooden baton and robbing the place, the Waxahachie Daily Light reported.

Next stop for Hughes was a PetSmart in Waco, where he asked for two corn snakes, a Mexican black kingsnake and a ball python, the Waco Tribune reported.

Hughes tried to leave the store without paying and when confronted, he allegedly whipped out a knife and threatened to kill the clerk before fleeing the store.

Hughes then led police in Itasca on a high-speed chase at 100 miles per hour, stopped only when officers used spike-strips to slow the stolen pickup truck.

Hughes has a prior conviction for arson and faces two counts of aggravated assaults with a deadly weapon, evading arrest, resisting arrest and grand theft auto.
