Doja Cat Mocks Sydney Sweeney’s Controversial American Eagle Ad

Doja Cat took to TikTok in response to American Eagle’s latest ad starring actress Sydney Sweeney and her “good jeans.” In her video, a parody of the original campaign, the Grammy-winner delivered Sweeney’s lines with an exaggerated accent, mispronouncing the color blue. “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,” mocked the 29-year-old. “My jeans are blew.” The 11-second clip was uploaded on Tuesday (July 29) and by Wednesday morning had over 18 million views. While the “Agora Hills” rapper had the intent to troll, her comedic TikTok highlighted the controversy surrounding the denim ad. The original spot featured Sidney Sweeney showcasing her American Eagle jeans, reciting the lines shared by Doja Cat. which is one of several elements of the full campaign, a male voice announced, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” making a play on the gene/jean homonym. The ad has been criticized and parodied across social media, with many viewers claiming it promoted eugenics. The discredited scientific theory is defined by the National Institutes of Health as “the use of selective breeding to improve the human race,” and was used to shape Nazi policies. “Praising Sydney Sweeney for her great jeans/genes in the context of her white, blonde hair, blue-eyed appearance, it is one of the loudest and most obvious racialized dog whistles we’ve seen and heard in a while,” exclaimed one TikTok user.
