NBC is pushing back hard against Sean “Diddy” Combs’ $100 million defamation lawsuit, arguing that its Peacock documentary, The Making of a Bad Boy, didn’t tarnish the mogul’s reputation—because, according to the network, that damage had already been done. The media giant’s newly filed motion to dismiss, positions Combs’ own legal troubles and courtroom admissions as the true source of his downfall, not the film he claims defamed him. Central to NBC’s argument is Combs’ statement at his federal sentencing, where he addressed the judge after being partially convicted on sex trafficking and racketeering charges. “Because of my decisions, I lost my freedom,” Combs told the judge at his sentencing, where he received a 50-month prison term “I lost my career. I totally destroyed my reputation.” NBC contends this admission undercuts the lawsuit’s premise that the documentary irreparably harmed his image, insisting the mogul had already publicly acknowledged responsibility for the collapse of his career and public standing. But Combs’ camp says NBC is distorting the meaning and relevance of that remark. His team argues that the network is sidestepping the core issue: whether The Making of a Bad Boy was produced and released responsibly. “NBC’s argument takes a single remark out of its legal context and has no relevance to whether the documentary met basic standards of accuracy and responsibility, “The lawsuit challenges NBC’s publication of allegations that are factually unsupported, contradicted by official records, or sourced from undisclosed, unreliable individuals. Those issues will be decided on their merits in court. Filed in February 2025, Combs’ lawsuit claims the documentary portrayed him as a sinister, almost supernatural villain, even likening him to the devil. The suit accuses NBCUniversal of acting “maliciously and recklessly” by airing claims of “serial murder” and “sexual assault of minors” without a “shred of evidence.”
