An Israeli diamond dealer was robbed of more than $2 million of the precious gems by a group of cunning crooks who pulled off an artful heist in north Hollywood Thursday night.
The bandits tracked the gem peddler as he drove in his car and used two vehicles to intentionally cause a wreck - trapping the man and his jewels.
"One would be led to believe they obviously knew who they were targeting," police Sgt. Mike Kammert told NBC Los Angeles.
The diamond dealer, who police did not name, was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Bellair Ave. and Burbank Blvd. when the thieves struck just after 10 p.m.
They rammed his car from behind with one vehicle, and then pulled in front of him with the other to block his escape.
Five or six men got out of the cars and quickly got physical, the man told police.
"He said he tried to fight them off, but they started beating him in the head and face," Kammert told the LA Daily News.
The man told police the robbers then smashed the back window of his car and plucked from the back seat a backpack that held more than $2 million in diamonds.
Kammert told the paper investigators are not sure why the man was traveling alone so late at night with so many diamonds. He also may be out of luck - he told NBC Los Angeles he didn't have insurance for the gems.
