Denzel Washington To Direct And Produce August Wilson Plays For HBO

Denzel Washington announced that he will be the executive producer and director of ten August Wilson stageplays that will be adapted for an HBO series

The two-time Oscar winner told an audience at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts that he plans to do one play a year for the network over the next 10 years.

Washington, who broke the news during a sit-down interview with critical studies professor and scholar Dr. Todd Boyd, said the works include the Pulitzer-winning playwright’s “Fences,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Piano Lesson.”

Washington said he plans to act in just one, “Fences,” — which will begin production next year.

In 2010, Washington starred in the Broadway revival of “Fences” with Viola Davis, the leading lady in “How To Get Away With Murder.”

Both performers won Tony Awards for best actor and best actress for their portrayal of characters Troy Maxson and Rose.

Davis will act alongside Washington in the HBO adaptation of the play.
