Danai Gurira To Play Afeni Shakur In Tupac Biopic

All eyes are on the new Tupac Shakur biopic this week.

"The Walking Dead" star Danai Gurira, who plays "Michonne" on the post-apocalyptic series, has signed on to play the late West Coast rapper's mother Afeni Shakur in "All Eyez on Me," according to Deadline Hollywood.

Gurira — whose signature brown-hued dreadlocks are just a temporary look for the AMC zombie megahit—bears a striking resemblance to the Ex-Black Panther, with her dark complexion and low-cut hairstyle.

Gurira recently wrapped a sold-out stint in “Eclipsed,” an Off-Broadway she wrote, starring Lupita Nyong’o.

She isn't the only dead-ringer in the film's lineup — newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr. nails Tupac's furrowed stare and 2009's "Notorious" actor Jamal Woolard gets to reprise his role as Tupac's East Coast rap nemesis, Biggie Smalls.

The project, which has been in production since late December in Atlanta, has come to a few stops over the years. In 2010, Afeni Shakur and the production company Morgan Creek engaged in a dispute over the story and the activist was also arrested on a drug possession charge in Lumberton, N.C. in the same year, according to MTV News.

The film also went through changes with directors, beginning with John Singleton and Carl Franklin. Hip hop music video director Benny Boom currently sits in the director's chair.

Tupac died on Sept. 13 in 1996 - six days after he was struck multiple times during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.
