IT REALLY was my sister!
The owner of the Acura that barreled over a young Bloomberg aide in a Brooklyn hit-and-run spoke out for the first time Thursday, blaming her institutionalized sister.
"I am the owner of the vehicle involved in the accident. My sister was the driver of the car involved in the accident," said Cindy Jasmin, 31, stoically reading from notes while her mom, dad and uncle looked on inside her attorney's lower Manhattan office.
Jasmin's voice started to crack when she called the accident tragic. "I'm sorry. We just want to resolve it," she whimpered.
The sister - Frances Jasmin, 28 - has said nothing so far about the Sunday crash that hospitalized Erinn Phelan, 22, and Alma Guerrero, 23, who were hit as they crossed Flatbush Ave. in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
She'll speak to cops when she's "fully better," said Adam Thompson, who represents both sisters.
Frances Jasmin is on suicide watch because of a mental breakdown after the accident, he said.
Police are investigating Cindy Jasmin's story but investigative sources have told the Daily News they're still skeptical. Frances Jasmin checked herself into New York-Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains, cops said.
"She's obviously scared. She panicked. She didn't know what to do," Thompson said, noting that Frances Jasmin had permission to use the car. "But, to make it clear, this does not make her some evil heinous monster who intended to hit someone."
Neither sister was the woman shown in security footage taken at a car service near the crash site, the lawyer also said.
