A man accused of murdering his daughter in an “honour killing” collapsed in the dock today as his wife gave evidence against him.
Mehmet Goren slumped in his chair and court officials called for medical assistance.
Mr Justice Bean halted proceedings and the jury was led from the Old Bailey courtroom.
Goren had been watching his wife Hanim give evidence for the prosecution about their 15-year-old daugher Tulay.
She disappeared in January 1999 after falling in love with an older man, Halil Unal, whom her family disapproved of.
The court has heard that Goren and his two brothers killed the girl to stop her marrying him. Her body has never been discovered.
Mehmet Goren was arrested at the time but no charges were brought. However, the case was reopened and Mrs Goren agreed for the first time to be a witness.
Mehmet Goren, 49, of Woodford Green, together with Cuma Goren, 42, and Ali Goren, 55, both of Walthamstow, deny murdering Tulay. They also deny conspiracy to murder Mr Unal. The case continues.
