A 17-year-old California student was stabbed to death in the middle of the school lunchroom by her enraged ex-boyfriend, authorities said Saturday.
Cindi Santana, a student at South East High School in South Gate, Calif. -- about 15 miles south of Los Angeles -- was allegedly stabbed by 18-year-old Abraham Lopez, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Lopez, who other students said had dated Santana on and off since the ninth grade, began choking and putting the girl in a headlock while she was having lunch Friday, the Times reported.
A school administrator and high school football player rushed to break up the fight when Lopez pulled out a knife and stabbed them both, the paper reported.
Both the administrator and student, Jorge Garcia, were treated for minor injuries.
Santana, who was stabbed in the side and the back, died during surgery at St. Francis Medical Center Friday night, the Times reported.
Police locked down the hospital briefly while they investigated a claim that Lopez had planted explosives in Santana's family car and home.
Their search did not turn up any bombs.
Lopez was being held on $1 million bail, authorities said.
