An out-of-work Staten Island man slashed and critically wounded his wife and two young children before putting a knife to his throat and taking his own life Sunday night, police and neighbors said.
Stay-at-home dad Douglas Nemeth, 41, snapped and cut the necks of wife Victoria Orlik and their babies, 3-year-old Sasha and 1-year-old Brandon, in the family's Hempstead Ave. home.
"I'm tired of this," Nemeth yelled, according to neighbor Daniel Perugini, 21, who heard the couple arguing. "I'm not going through this all the time!"
Nemeth, who was described by neighbors as an unemployed chiropractor, slashed Orlik, 34, and Brandon - who were rushed to Staten Island North Hospital - before barricading himself with Sasha at 7:30 p.m.
Nemeth kept cops at bay for about 90 minutes. When they finally entered the home, police walked into a bloody nightmare.
"He was covered in blood" in the kitchen, police said of Nemeth. "It was a pretty clean slash wound to the neck."
Sasha was discovered in an upstairs bedroom, police said. They, too, were taken to the hospital, but Nemeth died on the way.
Orlik was in a medically induced coma last night, while the children were undergoing surgery, police said.
The carnage seemed to come out of nowhere for Nemeth, who neighbors said doted on his babies.
"He always walked with the stroller and was with the kids," said Anna Ogurstova, 55, who lives on the block. "I've never seen him aggressive. He was a nice neighbor."
Still, others saw occasional flashes of rage.
"He had temper problems," said Konstantine Mitkin, 25.
"How do you this?" Mitkin, a family friend, added. "That's your own kids."
