It may sound like a plea for kids to eat their veggies, but D.R.A.M.’s 2016 track “Broccoli,” featuring Lil Yachty, was actually about green pleasures of a different kind.
“It’s still amusing when people say they didn’t know ‘broccoli’ is a word for marijuana,” he tells The Post. It didn’t matter, because the song peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard charts, sending the 28-year-old into the hip-hop mainstream.
He’s bringing the smash single, as well as songs from his debut album, “Big Baby D.R.A.M.,” to Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday and Bowery Ballroom on Saturday. Here are three things you need to know about the Virginia rapper.
He’s Beyoncé-approved
D.R.A.M. (real name Shelley Massenburg-Smith) says his life changed overnight in 2015 when Queen Bey gave a shoutout to his early track “Cha Cha” on Instagram.
“I was on the Lower East Side somewhere,” he says. “I stood up on a bench and just started screaming at people. This dude looked like Richard Gere, so I just shouted, ‘Hey, Richard Gere! Beyoncé likes “Cha Cha!” ’ He was so startled.”
He’s got a taste for the high life . . .
Since “Broccoli” became a smash, D.R.A.M. (which stands for “Does Real Ass Music”) admits to being partial to coat-shopping sprees.
“I like going to the stores where the snobbish folks go to, where they serve you Champagne. I drink it fast and say, ‘Bring me another one — I’m still shopping!’ ”
. . . And so does his dog
D.R.A.M.’s 1-year-old goldendoodle, Idnit, has become a minor celebrity since being featured on the cover of “Big Baby D.R.A.M.,” but he hasn’t been spoiled — the pup was born with baller tastes.
“As a puppy, he would not eat hard food! He’d just look at you and walk away,” he says. “You had to mix in wet food every single time! He was born bougie.”
