A movie screening turned into a scene out of a Hollywood blockbuster Wednesday after a near riot broke out outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre, police said.
An estimated 2,000 people flooded Hollywood Blvd. near the famed movie house to attend an impromptu party outside the screening of a documentary about the Electric Daisy Carnival rave, according to authorities.
"There were people trampling all over the police cars, smashing the windows," said Greg Magda, who works at a coffee shop on Hollywood Boulevard.
Witnesses said people were dancing on police cars and throwing bottles at cops, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"I knew it was going to get out of hand when they started taunting the police," Adam Bloch, 20, who works across from the theater, told the newspaper. "They were asking for it."
Police donned riot gear and fired nonlethal bean bags at the crowd to disperse it, the LA Times reported.
DJ Kaskade ignited the mass turnout earlier in the day when he sent his 90,000 followers on Twitter this message: Today@6pm in Hollywood @Mann's Chinese Theatre. ME+BIG SPEAKERS+MUSIC=BLOCK PARTY!!! RT!
The premiere of the "Electric Daisy Carnival Experience" had been set at Grauman's for weeks, KTLA News reported. It was to include an after-party at Supperclub, which was to include Kaskade. But the whole event was by invite only.
Many of those out on the street were people who had been turned away by security because they didn't have tickets, according to KTLA News.
Kaskade, who police say had no permit for his spontaneous outside concert, later used Twitter again to encourage people to calm down and go home.
"EVERYONE NEEDS TO GO HOME NOW! I DON'T WANT THIS TO REFLECT BADLY ON EDM OR WHAT WE ARE ABOUT," he tweeted. "BE RESPECTFUL AND CHILL OUT!!"
Supperclub, where the after-party was to be held, also encouraged people who did not have tickets to stay away.
"For the safety of our community, DO NOT COME TO SUPPERCLUB tonight," they posted via Twitter. "We are grateful for everyone for helping to make this an AWESOME night!"
A section of Hollywood Blvd. was shut down and a Metro Red Line subway station was closed during the disturbance.
Two people were arrested for investigation of felony vandalism; three police cars were damaged, police said. No injuries were reported.
