Cordae has finally revealed why YBN disbanded. During an interview with YouTuber Peaks100, the North Carolina emcee spoke about his humble beginnings with YBN, which featured Nahmir and Almighty Jay, who all broke through in 2017. And while the trio had a promising future, everything abruptly stopped in 2020 after Cordae dropped the acronym from his name. Fans were never given an explanation as to why, but the rapper now asserts that “there were multiple reasons” for the change and YBN’s disbanding.“There were multiple reasons,” he told the content creator. “Sadly, name one group that stayed together. Not even the Jackson 5 stayed brothers. Wu-Tang Clan went off to do their own thing too… Nahmir, that’s still my homie. Jay, I still f**k with bruh. Nahmir threw ni**as that [alley] oop, so I’m very grateful.” Cordae then explained that YBN lacked the unity that music groups need to achieve longevity and to create a cohesive vision. He pointed out the group’s poor business decisions and creative direction—which led to numerous arguments and eventual breakup. “We never recorded a song with all three of us,” he continued. “The business side was honestly pretty messed up. Things got heated in Europe, and once certain words are said, you can’t take them back.” YBN’s breakup was previously touched upon by Almighty Jay in 2021. A frustrated Jay took to social media at the time, alleging that former manager James McMillan engaged in bad business practices. Jay claimed that he signed himself, Nahmir, and Cordae to “janky deals,” while also trademarking the YBN acronym behind the trio’s backs. Almighty Jay then went on to claim that McMillian exploited the group while they were young, assigning them a lawyer that he was previously engaged to. “This ni**a James McMillan is a fraud. He [signs] ni**a to janky deals and f**k em over. Nobody [knows] NOTHING about the sh*t we go through on the daily basis being signed to this ni**a cause we cover for his a. I’m done with this sh*t,” Jay said. “If y’all really wanna know why YBN broke up,” he wrote.
