Chicago police say cops shot a 13-year-old boy late Monday because he was pointing a gun at them - but his parents insist their son was unarmed.

Jimmel Cannon, was struck eight times in the shoulders, hand and leg, the Windy City's NBC 5 News reported. His wounds are not considered life-threatening.

Police arrived on the scene in West Humboldt Park around 11 p.m. in response to a call about shots being fired. When they arrived they found the teen, who authorities say matched the description of the gunman.

They tried to talk to Jimmel, who police said appeared to be holding a weapon. When he pointed it at them, the cops opened fire.

Authorities said they later found that he was armed with a BB gun, Fox 32 News reported.

The boy's family say their boy was not armed and was holding his hands up when cops shot him.

"I know my son. He doesn't carry weapons or hang around people who carry weapons," the teen's father, Jimmy Porter, told NBC 5 News. "He's a 13-year-old, he plays basketball."

He and the teen's mother, Kenyatta Cannon, said their son was with them at a birthday party when cops arrived.

"We were all out. It was not just him, it was all my kids," she told Fox 32 News. "We were at my cousin's 17th birthday party."

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden told the Sun-Times Media Wire police acted appropriately, given the circumstances.
