Chris Rock's 2014 divorce really brought the pain, but the comedian now admits that after all is said and done, he has only himself to blame.
Rock, who is currently in the middle of a nationwide comedy tour, his first in years, recently sat down with Rolling Stone and got candid on the lingering effects of his split from his wife of 18 years, Malaak Compton-Rock, with whom he shares two daughters.
"I wasn't a good husband a lot of the times," Rock, 52, admits both in the magazine and on stage during his stand-up set. "I was a piece of s-t."
Rock and his wife's divorce was finalized in 2016 following reports that he cheated on her, a habit he says in his act he felt he could get away with because he was the family's breadwinner and famous face.
"That's bulls--t," he told the magazine of his old mentality. "That actually goes the other way. My faults are magnified. Your significant other, if they really love you, has a high opinion of you. And you let them down … Getting divorced, you have to f---ing start over. You get to reset. It's not a breakdown, but something in your life broke down."
While Rock is open about his relationship with his ex — he admitted on stage to Dave Chappelle that he cried during their custody battle, and he does comb his divorce for material on his Total Blackout tour — Rock is also careful not to reveal too much.
"It's not fair — I have a mic, she doesn't," he said. "God forbid people are bugging her in the supermarket. That's not cool. I'm going to have to see her at weddings and graduations."
These days, Rock shares custody of his children, Lola and Zahra, and even purchased a house down the street from Malaak's in order to remain close by. He's also moved on with a new lady love, "Arrow" actress Megalyn Echikunwoke, whom he was spotted cuddling with at a Knicks game in October.
"She's got her own dough," Rock said of his girlfriend. "It's amazing."
