Chris Rock was diagnosed with a learning disorder earlier this year, which makes it difficult for him to pick up on non-verbal signals.
It’s something that Rock says may have led to his divorce from ex-wife Malaak Compton in 2016 after 20 years of marriage.
The 55-year-old comedian told The Hollywood Reporter that after lengthy testing, doctors diagnosed Rock with a condition called non-verbal learning disorder, or NVLD.
Rock explained that he has difficulty with non-verbal signals which make up about 80 percent of communication.
“By the way, all of those things are really great for writing jokes — they’re just not great for one-on-one relationships,” he said.
“And I’d always just chalked it up to being famous,” he continued. “Any time someone would respond to me in a negative way, I’d think, ‘Whatever, they’re responding to something that has to do with who they think I am.’ Now, I’m realizing it was me. A lot of it was me.”
The “Top Five” star is now in therapy seven hours a week with two therapists to deal with his diagnosis and a painful childhood that saw him mercilessly bullied as the only black student at an all-white school.
Another thing the divorced father of two has achieved during lockdown are some killer abs courtesy of a combination of walking, weight-lifting, swimming and cutting out sugar.
