Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, this is “Guava Island” — look what he’s whippin’ up.
The first footage from Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) and Rihanna’s secret film project hit Twitter over the weekend and fans are geeking out.
The blurry fan-shot clip was captured at the “This Is America” singer’s third annual three-day PHAROS Festival in New Zealand, where Glover screened the two-minute trailer.
The crowd roars as the sneak peek slowly comes into focus to reveal a moody, slightly off-key Glover serenading Rihanna, with the latter quipping, “Practice is perfection.”
Rapid-fire shots of syncopated drumming, dancing and kidnapping amp up the clip, punctuated by a worried RiRi asking: “What’s wrong with you?”
“We live in paradise but none of us actually have the time or the means to live here,” a frustrated Glover responds. “We work hard. We deserve a day off. We’re just takin’ what’s ours.”
Online fan reactions range from “I’m seeing this, TAKE MY MONEY B—H” to “I feel like I’m watching this from The Sunken Place” to “this is cultural appropriation.”
The hush-hush “Childish Gambino Production” was lensed in Cuba, and co-stars breakout “Black Panther” ingenue Letitia Wright.
“I can’t tell you anything,” Wright tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t even know … what is Guava Island? I have no clue. I don’t know anything. I don’t even know where they got my name from!”
The PHAROS Festival has become known an unofficial launchpad for Gambino/Glover projects. He famously previewed his then-upcoming album, “Awaken, My Love!,” at the inaugural fest, circa 2016, at Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California.
