Chance The Rapper Reveals Apple Music Paid Him $500,000 For 'Coloring Book'

Chance the Rapper has been looked to as a pioneer in the music industry for maintaining his independence by not tying himself to a major label and going the free mixtape route instead of charging for a studio album. That’s why recent news suggesting the rapper might sell his next album became particularly noteworthy. Now, in an extended Twitter commentary, the Grammy winner has revealed that Apple Music paid him $500,000 for exclusive streaming rights to Coloring Book.

On Friday, the Chicago native opened up about his relationship with the streaming giant, acknowledging he was compensated for his third mixtape, which recently scored Best Rap Album at the Grammys.

Saying people were trying to “discredit my independence,” Chance shared that he was paid $500,000 and given a commercial for the mixtape to exclusively appear on Apple Music for the first two weeks upon its release last May.

“That was the extent of my deal, after 2 weeks it was on Soundcloud for free,” he said. “I needed the money and they’re all good people over there.”

Chance continued, “I think artist can gain a lot from the streaming wars as long as they remain in control of their own product. I just wanna remain transparent. Folks out there without a deal need to know they’re doing everything right just keep at it.”

Over the last few years, Apple Music has secured exclusive rights to albums from some of the biggest names in music, including Drake and Frank Ocean.

“If you come across oprtunities to work with good people, pick up cash and keep your integrity I say Do It,” concluded Chance.
