Chaka Khan Did Not Like Kanye West’s “Through The Wire” Sample

Chaka Khan was “pissed” when she heard Kanye West‘s 2004 song “Through the Wire.”

In a new interview, Grammy-winning Khan said she gave West, 42, the rights to sample her 1984 song “Through the Fire,” but felt duped because their conversations went “very differently than the song turned out.”

However, an industry source told Page Six that artists have to approve usage for the song to be cleared, meaning Khan, 66, must have signed off on the final version.

Khan said on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” this week that the rapper tugged at her heartstrings with a story about how her music helped him recover from a serious car accident in 2002 to get her to agree.

“He called me when he just got out of the hospital,” she told Andy Cohen. “He said, ‘You were so instrumental in my healing process. I had to change the words a little bit to the song, but I had to eat through a wire, you know, and I was wired shut, through a straw.”

“It meant that much to me and it really got my heart,” Khan added.

However, when “Through the Wire” was released, the song featured Khan’s verses in a faster speed than the original.

“I was pissed,” she said. “I was a little insulted — not insulted, I thought it was stupid.”

Khan added that if she knew West had planned to speed up her vocals, she would’ve said “hell no” to him using the track — despite her making money off the sample.

The “I’m Every Woman” singer said she never spoke to the rapper about her disapproval, but rather “gave him silence.”

However, in 2004, Khan performed the song with West at the MTV Video Music Awards.

After the performance, she received backlash for her vocals. Her rep told the “Today” show at the time that the singer “received a cortisone shot just hours prior to her VMA performance to honor her commitment to Kanye West.”
