The “Call of Duty” pays big bucks.
The latest installment of the blockbuster video game franchise, “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” surpassed $1 billion in sales in a single day, setting a new record, its publisher announced Wednesday.
“Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, in a news release.
“More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay.”
The previous record holder, “Grand Theft Auto V,” surpassed $1 billion in sales in three days.
The highest-grossing movie of all time, “Avatar,” took 39 days to set a box-office record, with $1.86 billion in sales, surpassing “Titanic.”
“Ghosts,” which was released Tuesday, is available on XBox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U and PC and retails for $59.99.
The first-person shooter is the 10th installment of the franchise known for bloody cinematic battles and a dedicated following online.
Activision said that the previous installment in the series, “Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” has “generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year.”
