Bruno Mars' family is mourning the loss of the pop star's mother, Bernadette Hernandez.
Hernandez, 55, passed away Saturday after suffering a brain aneurysm — according to a publicist for Mars' label, Atlantic Records, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak on the record.
Mars, 27, whose real name is Peter Hernandez, is one of six children — including his four sisters who are currently in a girl group, and a brother who serves as the drummer for the Grammy winner's band.
Mars is one of pop's top acts with several No. 1 hits including his most recent, "When I Was Your Man." His mother, a hula dancer and a singer who emigrated from the Philippines, nurtured her son's interest in music at an early age.
The singer has talked openly about his musical upbringing and time spent in the family band.
"I wouldn't trade it for anything," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "Because I feel like I can enjoy this so much."
