IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

BRAZEN DIAMOND HEIST @ A CROWDED GRAND CENTRAL STATION!

A trio of bandits pulled off a brazen Hollywood-style jewel heist in a busy rush-hour Grand Central Terminal, police revealed Friday.
Two of the thieves staged simultaneous stunts to distract a pair of jewelers who were dining at the terminal.

While the jewelers were distracted, a third bandit swiped a black duffel bag with $120,000 worth of gold and diamond jewelry, swapping it on the terminal floor with a nearly identical bag.

The jewelers quickly realized they'd been had, but it was too late. The thieves melted away into the crowd.

"It was well-planned, well- thought-out and well carried through," MTA police Detective Mike Alfalla said.

Alfalla and Detective Alexander Rubino called on the public to help solve the June 24 crime.

They released surveillance footage from a Chinatown subway station that captured one member of the trio.

The detectives have not ruled out the possibility that this was an inside job.

"This crime has been suspicious from the start," Alfalla said.

One of the thieves followed one of the jewelers for hours, detectives said.

The jewelers, described by police as wholesalers, met for a bite at the terminal around 6 p.m. on June 24.

When one of them rose to throw trash in a nearby bin, police said, one of the thieves staged a slip-and-fall accident, calling for help.

Over at the restaurant table, another thief tapped the other jeweler on the shoulder, saying he'd dropped $10.

With both jewelers distracted, the third thief swiped the bag, police said.

All three of the criminals wore light-blue shirts and dark-blue pants similar to the uniforms of Metro-North Railroad train crews.

Detectives suspect they did that so they would blend in and be harder to identify.

"Rarely, have we seen something played out like this," Alfalla said.

The jewelers worked for My Oro jewelers on W. 47th St. Many of the items were engraved with the initials M and O.

A person who answered the phone at the diamond district store said the owner was unavailable for comment.
