Bill Maher On Mozilla CEO Firing - "There Is A Gay Mafia If You Cross Them You Get Whacked"

Bill Maher's "Overtime" segment on Friday night may have eclipsed his "Real Time" conversations when he weighed in on the controversy surrounding ousted Mozilla Firefox CEO Brendan Eich — and voiced an equally polarizing opinion on the matter.

During the online-only post-show segment, Maher, 58, asked his panel of contributors about their thoughts on the tech wizard's decision to step down as Mozilla's CEO after facing backlash for supporting a California same-sex marriage ban effort in 2008.

"I think there is a gay mafia," Maher said. "I think if you cross them, you do get whacked. I really do."
Maher didn't elaborate on what he considers to be the "gay mafia," but the comment suggested he believes that there is a group of powerful gay people, or activists, who go after companies that disagree with their political views.

The HBO late-night host came under fire on social media for his half-joking comments. People took to Twitter and blogs over the weekend voicing outrage at his observation.

"I'd love to know who @BillMaher THINKS he's talking about with this 'gay mafia' business," writer Steve Silberman tweeted. "One name? Two?"

Others noted that Maher, who tends to be on the liberal side of politics, was an unlikely source for such a comment.
