That didn't take long.
Just a day after a backlash against Beyonce because her innovative Billboard Music Awards performance of "Run the World (Girls)" was very similar to that of one by Italian pop star Lorella Cuccarini last year, the singer is responding.
"My makeup artist showed me the performance of Lorella Cuccarini a year ago, and it inspired me so much," Beyonce tells AOL Music. "I then met with the talented people who worked on it. The technology and concept were so genius. Thank God for YouTube or I would have never been exposed to something so inspiring. I never worked so hard on anything in my life as that performance for the Billboard Awards."
In a video of Beyonce and Cuccarini's performances shown side-by-side, the coincidences were uncanny.
As Beyonce's production begins, wings flap around her as a flock of birds simultaneously take off above Cuccarini.
Within seconds of each other, both singers play with animated boxes and globes. Later, as Beyonce pretends to eat the world, Earth floats above Cuccarini on the screen.
Towards the end, Beyonce is joined onstage with her "army" of female dancers, while Cuccarini marches in-step with digital dancers.
The Italian pop star's show ends the way Beyonce's began: enveloped in wings.
