Beyonce is no one’s idea of a shy housewife. But for some reason she felt the need to make that point blindingly obvious in her bracing new track, “Bow Down/I Been On.”
“I took some time to live my life/but don’t think I’m just his little wife,” the ultimate independent woman, who happens to be married to Jay-Z, loudly announces on a song she debuted on her website Sunday.
Over a brisk and needling hip-hop beat, the supreme diva aims her declaration at those “who dreamed of being in my world,” commanding them to “Bow down, b-----s.”
The campy, imperious tone exploits her role as pop queen to the hilt.
Likewise, the cover art for the single shows a preening, pre-teen Beyonce dressed like a princess and surrounded by a mantle full of trophies and awards.
The second half of the three-minute-and-33-second song contains a dramatically altered version of Beyonce’s voice, slowing it down to a deep rap. The sound echoes the druggy style of “chopped and screwed” recordings, a hallmark of the Houston hip-hop scene. Both parts were produced by Hit Boy, who oversaw a recording by Beyonce hubby Jay-Z and Kanye West called “N----s in Paris.” The track represents the first new recording released by Beyonce since her smash 2011 CD, “4.”
The song serves as a tease for a new album to be released during the star’s upcoming, 42-city world tour, which kicks off April 15th in Belgrade, Serbia.
Beyonce’s latest declaration of supreme diva-ness may well come in reaction to the title she herself gave to the upcoming tour: "The Mrs. Carter Show,” which references her married name.
The tour hits our area on July 31 at the Izod Center before coming to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center Aug. 3, 4 and 5.
