Luxury carmaker Bentley is recalling nearly 1,500 cars for faulty hood ornaments that could hurt pedestrians by failing to retract in an accident.
The metal emblem - known as a "flying B" - is designed to fold into the hood upon impact.
But corrosion in the mechanism may cause it to remain upright in a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says.
There have been no injuries reported as a result of the problem, but the agency warns a pedestrian could become impaled if struck.
The recall affects the Arnage, Azure and Brooklands models manufactured between 2007 and 2009, of which 1,436 were sold, said Bentley spokeswoman Valentine O'Connor.
The cars retail for between $225,000 and $340,000.
