Protesting is one of the most powerful things that civilians can do globally, but history has shown that authorities have been willing to meet their efforts with violence. Auma Obama, the half-sister of former President Barack Obama, was seen suffering the effects of teargas on live TV while protesting in Kenya. Civil unrest has been prominent in Kenya ever since tax increases were proposed via the 2024 Finance Bill. This past Tuesday, Auma Obama spoke with Larry Madowo, a correspondent with CNN, about her feelings on the bill and her protest efforts. While speaking with Madowo, and being surrounded by her fellow protestors, viewers can see teargas thrown in the background. The teargas slowly made its way up to where Auma stood, and she began to cough. “I can’t even see anymore, we’re being teargassed,” she said through loud coughs. The interview ended abruptly and they all ran away to safety. Check out the footage below. “Despite the assurance by the Government that the right to assembly would be protected and facilitated, today’s protests have spiraled into violence,” read a joint statement from Amnesty International Kenya, the Kenya Medical Association, the Law Society of Kenya, and Police Reforms Working Group Kenya. “Human rights observers and medical officers have reported several incidents of human rights violation.” Barack Obama’s camp was contacted, but they declined to comment on the footage. Some incidents went beyond teargassing, leaving people injured and even dead. Five protestors were shot and killed by Kenyan police in Nairobi on Tuesday. The lawmakers who voted to pass the bill, however, fled through an underground tunnel to avoid any trouble from the public. Those who voted “no” were allowed to safely maneuver the public, as they were aligned with protestors. Reportedly, protestors also burned part of Kenya’s parliament building. They also were reported to be yelling “We’re coming for every politician.
