Rap phenom Azealia Banks can’t seem to get along with anyone.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) slammed the “212” rapper for her use a homophobic slur in a tweet aimed at Perez Hilton.
The gossip blogger had taken sides against Banks in her feud with fellow up and coming rapper, Angel Haze, which caused the 21-year-old Harlemite to open up a second front.
“lol what a messy f----- you are," she tweeted Friday night at Hilton, who is openly gay.
Amid outraged responses from many followers, Banks tried to clarify her remarks: "A f----t is not a homosexual male. A f----t is any male who acts like a female. There's a BIG difference."
Banks later tweeted that she was sorry if she offended anyone — with the exception of Hilton himself — but seemed to backtrack from the apology hours later.
“Really not as moved by this f word thing as u all want me to be,” she tweeted Saturday. “As a bisexual person I knew what I meant when I used that word.”
That may have been good enough to end the controversy for Banks, but not for GLAAD. The organization said it reached out to Banks’ representatives and was working to compile gay fans and teens’ stories of bullying to help educate the rapper.
“Banks’ claim that the word "fa**ot" doesn’t mean a gay male is not true,” a representative wrote on the organization’s website. “Regardless of her intent or her personal definition, what matters is the meaning given to that word by those who hear it, and the damage it causes when they do.
“Undoubtedly there are gay kids who follow her on Twitter who hear this word in an entirely different context. This word is used almost universally by bullies, often as part of a larger verbal or physical assault. This word hurts those kids, no matter what Banks meant by it.”
