A newly formed airline in Thailand has hired six transsexuals as flight attendants in an effort to promote equal opportunities for what's called the "third sex" in Southeast Asia, according to London's Telegraph.

More than 100 transsexuals applied for the coveted positions with PC Air, and more are expected to be hired, the airline's president, Peter Chan, told AFP.

"I think these people can have many careers, not just in the entertainment business, and many of them have a dream to be an air hostess. I just made their dream come true," said Chan.

Thailand has one of the largest "katoey" populations in the world. Surgeons there have come up with cheap and speedy sex change techniques for those wanting to go under the knife.

But it's not mandatory that applicants go through surgery to be considered for a job, said Chan. What's important is they have the necessary language skills and can provide good service. Nontransexuals were also hired.

Thanyarat (Film) Jiraphatpakorn, the winner of the Miss Tiffany beauty pagent in 2007, was one of the lucky few chosen. She said she was ecstatic.

"At first I thought they would just take applications but not actually recruit us, as happened at other places before," the 23-year-old told Thailand's Nation newspaper.

The transsexual employees will wear a special gold "third sex" nametag to help travelers and airline employees identify what gender they are, according to Nation.

"Our society has changed -- it's evolution," said Chan. "I'm a pioneer, and I'm sure there will be [other] organizations following my idea."

PC Air expects to be in operation, serving South Korea and Japan, by April.
