Australian Man Tries To Remove A Roach From His Ear With A Vacuum Cleaner

An Australian man who went to the doctors ended up having a large cockroach removed from his ear.

Before seeking the advice of medics, Hendrik Helmer had tried to remove the nearly inch-long pest with a vacuum cleaner.

Doctors eventually removed the insect using forceps.

"They said they had never pulled an insect this large out of someone's ear," Helmer told Australia's ABC News, as cited by the BBC.

The incident happened in the remote Australian northern city of Darwin.

Helmer woke up earlier in the week with a pain in his right ear, reports the BBC.

Helmer feared a poisonous spider had crawled inside his head during the night while he slept.

As the pain got worse, he then resorted to trying to get rid of the cockroach by squirting water into his ear, then using a vacuum cleaner.

"Whatever was in my ear didn't like it all," said Helmer.

The cockroach died after burrowing deeper into his ear.

A doctor used forceps to remove the pest.

"(The doctor) said, 'You know how I said a little cockroach, that may have been an underestimate," Helmer added.

His friends have now advised him to wear headphones to bed.
