Aretha Franklin’s Michigan Home Back On The Market For $1.2M

If what you want is Aretha Franklin’s former home — baby, you got it! It’s back on the market for $1.2 million.

Shortly after the Queen of Soul’s passing in 2018, her suburban mansion in Bloomfield Township, MI, came onto the market for $800,000. We noted at the time that the dated interiors showed little sign that the legendary diva had inhabited the house.

Now, the property has returned to the market, at a higher price, and in a much better state. Freshly renovated, it’s now partially staged, with some of Franklin’s iconic items. In other words, the home has been shown with a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Although Franklin owned the house, she hadn’t lived there for 15 years, says listing agent Michael Hermiz. The home was in a state of disrepair and required major work.

“This house is one of her beautiful houses that she lived in,” says Hermiz. “It’s a beautiful home. It is in turn-key, move-in condition and tastefully done.”

As a dramatic note, the red piano from the entertainer’s Detroit home has been moved into the space.

Even after the improvements, touches of Franklin are still visible, including the extra-large cedar closets, the stove she cooked on in the kitchen and the chandelier over the dining room table.

Built in 1990 and set in a scenic gated community, the Colonial-style home measures 4,100 square feet and features five bedrooms, along with 5.5 baths. The courtyard entrance leads to a grand two-story marble foyer, which opens to a great room with a granite fireplace, a wall of windows, French doors and a wet bar. A portrait of the performer now greets visitors, along with her fire-engine red piano.

The updated gourmet kitchen has granite and marble floors, a huge island and a breakfast nook. Along with a formal dining room, there’s also a library with French doors. A main-floor master suite offers wood floors, a private deck, huge closets and a marble bath. The lower level includes a finished walkout family room with a guest suite.

Last month, a dispute regarding the wills left by the late singer went to court. A legal battle over administration of the Franklin estate looms and the “sale is subject to probate court approval,” according to the listing description.

In addition to this suburban home, Franklin also owned a Detroit condo and two properties in the Detroit suburb of Highland Park.

The recording phenom produced hits such as “Chain of Fools,” “Think” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” The 18-Grammy Award winner was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Having sold 75 million records worldwide, she’s one of the best-selling musicians of all time.
