A diver fishing for abalone off Australia's West Coast is missing and presumed dead after reeling in much bigger game - a pair of great white sharks.
The unidentified man was viciously attacked by the sharks while swimming to the surface with his haul of the prized sea snails – while the skipper of his boat could only watch in horror, the newspaper The Australian reported.
"It has been reported that the diver was returning to the surface sometime Wednesday afternoon when two sharks, believed to be great whites, grabbed him," Police Senior Constable Tim Dodds told reporters on Thursday.
By the time the skipper returned the boat to shore at the appropriately-named Coffin Bay, 10 miles east of the attack site, he was in shock.
"I saw the beast come up and take him. There's no way he could have survived," the skipper told ambulance paramedics at the wharf, according to Australia's Daily Telegraph.
Residents said shark sightings in those waters have increased in recent weeks, but fatal attacks are rare in Australia. The last one came in August, when a surfer was fatally mauled off a Western Australian beach.
