It’s been a big week for Alicia Keys.
Not only did she announce a new memoir, the 15-time Grammy winner took the stage at the iHeartRadio Music Awards with her 8-year-old son, Egypt, for the very first time.
The pair performed her latest tune, “Raise a Man.” Keys sat at one piano and during the course of the song, she invited Egypt to play a second piano.
“The Mommy & Me moment I’ve been dreaming of!!” Keys, 38, said on social media after the show. “WOWOWOW!!! Egy I’m in awe of you! You’re so BRAVE and BEAUTIFUL and make me so PROUD!!! The feeling I felt with you next to me during this song???? FULL BODY CHILLS. You ROCKED SON!!!!! your journey is just beginning and I’m so blessed to #raiseaman like you.”
Keys was also honored with the Innovator award because of her “contributions to pop culture and social causes as an artist, songwriter, entrepreneur and activist.”
During her acceptance speech, Keys relayed an important message.
“I looked at the greats. I looked at Nina Simone and Sade and John Lennon and I realized that there was nobody else like them on the planet,” she said. “And I looked inside my heart and I realized that I am here to just do me. We are here do us, you know? It’s crazy … I know how it feels … all we can think about is how to be liked, and how to be accepted and we contort ourselves and change ourselves and starve ourselves and abuse ourselves and hate ourselves and instead, all we gotta do is just love who we are.”
