Help wanted: Factory that assembles gadgets like iPhones and iPads seeks workers willing to toil 24-7 on repetitive tasks and be paid nothing.
Humans need not apply.
A controversial Chinese company whose hi-tech clients include Apple, Dell and Hewlett Packard plans on expanding its workforce — with an army of one million robots.
Foxconn Technology Group, a contract manufacturer headquartered in Taiwan, will use the robots for simple tasks on production lines at its mainland China plants.
The company, which currently employs about one million workers of the flesh-and-blood variety, will add the robots within three years.
But folks who fear this is just the beginning of a "Terminator"-like future needn't bother worrying — machines replacing man has been already been happening for hundreds of years and will only get worse.
"Every economy on the planet is headed in this direction," said Prof. William Greene of NYU's Stern School of Business. "The replacement of human labor with machines has been going on ... in every economy since long before the Industrial Revolution."
Foxconn already uses about 10,000 robots. But mechanizing its workforce further is seen as a move to counteract rising labor costs in China, where the company — the largest private employer in the country — has recently dealt with a spate of strikes and allegations it runs an unsafe, 21st century-style sweatshop.
In May, an explosion at a Foxconn factory in Chengdu that assembles Apple products killed three workers. The company has also come under fire for a recent rash of suicides among its migrant workers.
