Late singer Aaliyah wanted nothing to do with R. Kelly after her parents got their marriage annulled.
In a preview released for “Surviving R. Kelly”, Damon Dash sits down to talk about Aaliyah’s relationship with R. Kelly.
At the time, a 27-year-old R. Kelly married a 15-year-old Aaliyah after allegedly obtaining a fake id for her. He is accused of bribing a state official to get the id.
R. Kelly was Aaliyah’s mentor while she recorded her first album. She would eventually leave him after her parents found out about the marriage. She was dating Damon Dash at the time of her tragic death.
In the clip, Dash calls Aaliyah a “sacrificial lamb” in regard to the Kelly situation. He says Aaliyah was a “good soul, good girl” who wasn’t “resentful” about the things Kelly allegedly did.
Dash recalls the singer of having the attitude of “let that man live but keep him away from me.”
He says she was just happy to be away from Kelly after the annulment. Dash trashed Kelly saying he was going after a 13-year-old. The producer corrects Dash saying Aaliyah was 15-years-old, which Dash says is the same thing in his mind. He tells the producer, “she was a child.”
According to the marriage certificate, the wedding between Kelly and Aaliyah was officiated on August 31, 1994 by Elder Nathan J. Edmond during a religious ceremony in Rosemont, Illinois.
The marriage was made official when it was recorded on September 6, 1994, but it was later annulled after Aaliyah's parents found out.
Last month, prosecutors hit Kelly with a new charge of bribery. They accuse him of paying off an Illinois state official to get then 15-year-old Aaliyah a fake id. He recently entered a plea of not guilty to the charge.
"Surviving R. Kelly" part two premieres tonight on Lifetime. R. Kelly's girlfriend Azriel Clary is living her best life ahead of the premiere.
