A Taiwanese boy accidentally destroyed a 350-year-old, million-dollar painting in a museum Sunday after tripping into it fist-first, punching a hole through the canvas.
Surveillance footage shows the 12-year-old walking with a crowd at “Face of Leonardo: Images of a Genius,” an exhibition at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei.
As he passes the painting “Flowers” by Italian Baroque painter Paolo Porpora,he trips in front of its barrier, smacking it with a hand holding a drink. The boy stands in disbelief for a few moments, looking at his fellow patrons, before walking away.
“Flowers” was painted around 1660 and is the only painting signed by Porpora, who specialized in floral still lifes. It is valued at $1.5 million, The Guardian reported.
The painting’s owner told Focus Taiwanthe boy’s family will not have to pay for restoring the ruined painting. The exhibition organizer said the boy shouldn’t be blamed for destroying the creative work — the painting was insured anyway, the owner added.
The “Face of Leonardo” exhibit includes 55 “very rare and precious” paintings, according to the exhibition’s Facebook page.
