In a shocking tragedy in New Jersey, a five-year-old boy is dead after he was accidentally shot in the back of the head by a six-year-old relative.
An apartment inside a house on Kearney Street in Paterson became the scene of an unimaginable tragedy on Sunday night. Prosecutors say a child accidentally shot and killed a relative while playing with a gun they found in a bedroom.
A man who walked out of the house says the two boys are brothers.
"I don't feel like saying nothing," he said.
Police have identified the five-year-old victim as Daron Mayes. Sources say he was adopted by the family about a month ago.
"The mother was screaming – the mother was screaming, and I saw her walking down," neighbor Pedro Gonzalez said.
"It was a baby being pulled out of the house," neighbor David Cruz said. "It was still a baby."
Neighbors watched in shock as the boy was rushed to the hospital Sunday night, where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators told CBS 2 early on they were looking to question a 23-year-old who owns the gun and lives in the home.
"That adult is stupid, he's really stupid to have a gun and have two kids playing around with [it]," Cruz said. "How come they weren't supervised?"
Prosecutors say the weapon was not registered.
The name of the six-year-old has not been released. Neighbors say the adoptive mother, whose name also has not been released, cared for foster children.
"I know the mother well – she's a nice person," a neighbor said.
"They used to play out with her," Gonzalez said. "I would see them every day, going down with the mother to school."
A spokesperson for the Department of Youth and Family Services told CBS 2 that she can't comment on the specifics of any case. She said they only release information when a caregiver has neglected or abused a child.
Authorities say that, at this point, they have not charged anyone in this case.
