A toddler suffered a freak death after falling into a grease trap behind a New Jersey market, officials said.
The three-year-old boy was walking behind Cidra's Supermarket in Vineland, N.J. Tuesday when he toppled into the 5-foot-deep pit containing kitchen grease, police said.
Store employees were unable to find the boy - who was the son of one the market's employees - amid the thick "brown, greasy fluid."
Firefighters had to use poles to locate the child in the waste.
"You couldn't see into it. It was just a sludgy material," Vineland Fire Capt. Anthony Baldosaro told The Press of Atlantic City. "We stirred the poles around until we felt a little bump. Then we latched him on to the poles and pulled him up."
Firefighters tried for several minutes to revive the boy - identified by several Philadelphia TV stations as Jordy Marmolejo - but were unsuccessful.
The pit is usually covered by a manhole but it had been removed as employees prepared to dump grease into it, cops said.
