Ever since Kanye West announced on New Year’s Eve that he and Kim Kardashian were expecting a baby, the tabloid world has been anxiously awaiting the birth of the K-child. But now, according to publishing industry insiders, first photos of Kanye and Kim’s kid could come at a reasonable price to the publisher who plays it smart.
“The million-dollar pay deal is now nonexistent,” says one industry insider, scoffing at earlier reports that West would never agree to sell the photos, and if he did, they’d fetch up to $3 million. “They will sell the baby photos, but not for what they want. It is not going to be a million-dollar payday.”
In 2008 People magazine and Britain’s Hello! magazine joined forces to secure exclusives rights of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s newborn twins Vivienne and Knox for a record $14 million. Our sources say snapshots of Kanye and Kim’s baby girl won’t see nearly that kind of windfall.
“People magazine is the most likely bidder and they will probably pay between $200 and $400K,” says our insider. “The Kardashians have dealt with Us Weekly in the past and they too have the budget for a big spend.”
During Kardashian’s pregnancy, Bauer Publishing’s InTouch and Life & Style magazines may have hurt their odds of landing first baby photos with headlines like “I Can’t Stop Eating” accompanied by embarrassing photos of the mom-to-be. Us Weekly took a softer approach, including a photograph of Kim K in a bikini with the headline, “You Call This Fat?”
One mag that could really use a big rebound from missteps in covering the birth of Kim and Kanye’s baby is OK!, which was caught off-guard by the premature birth and had already put this week’s issue to bed.
“For over a year now OK! closes its issue on Thursday,” marvels one magazine insider. “Every other celebrity weekly closes on Monday night, and People magazine even has the option of going to print as late as Tuesday in case any late-breaking news occurs. You are going to have to wait until June 26 before you can read about Kim’s birth in OK! That’s 10 days after it happened.”
OK!’s schedule also cost them a big scoop in mid-May when Angelina Jolie announced her double mastectomy surgery on a Monday — that turned out to be People’s biggest-selling cover of the year.
