To Sue Ann Hamm, $1 billion is an insultingly trivial amount.
The Oklahoma woman who was married to America's biggest oil baron, Harold Hamm, says she will appeal this week's divorce settlement that awarded her more than $1 billion in cash and assets. And that's not counting the California ranch and an Oklahoma estate worth millions more.
The divorce settlement, reached Monday, is one of the biggest in U.S. history.
Hamm, the chief executive officer of energy giant Continental Resources, owns 68% of his company's stock, worth an estimated $13.5 billion. The 68-year-old oil magnate owns more of the precious liquid than other American. He was born the 13th child of Oklahoma sharecroppers and is now the state's richest person.
Under his leadership, the company's value grew some 400-fold.
"Sue Ann is disappointed in the outcome of this case. She dedicated 25 years as Harold's faithful partner in family and business," said attorney Ron Barber on Thursday. The new divorcee considers the settlement amount "not equitable," he said.
His client is a lawyer and an economist. She worked the oil firm founded by her husband at various times in their marriage, at one point leading the crude marketing department, according to court documents.
Sue Ann Hamm feels she is entitled to more of the $18 billion rise in Continental shares owned by her husband during their marriage. Monday's settlement ruling awarded 94 percent of that increase to Harold Hamm.
The couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement.
