Lil Nas X Sued For $25 Million Over "Carry On"

Lil Nas X is being sued over a song he released five months before he hit it big with "Old Town Road" and the company going after him is $25 million in damages.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, a company called The Music Force claims it owns the rights to a song called "Carry On," which was written by Bobby Caldwell. The company claims the song was copyrighted back in 1983.

The Music Force claims Lil Nas X and his producer appropriated parts of Caldwell's song for their own song of the same name. They then claim that the duo, "motivated by greed and malicious intent," uploaded the song to YouTube, Spotify and SoundCloud.

The company then claims that in June of 2019, Sony acquired the rights to all of Lil Nas X's songs, including "Carry On." The Music Force claims that Sony "knew or should have known ... to make sure all elements of 'Carry On' had been cleared."

"Sony elected to take no action to stop this illegal, unauthorized infringement as it was far more important to Sony to preserve its opportunity to enjoy millions of dollars of revenues from the success of the career of X," the lawsuit claims.

The Music Force is suing for copyright infringement and they are also asking for the court to rule that Lil Nas X's song is "a joint work" owned by The Music Force and the defendants.

They are seeking $10 million in damages and then an additional $15 million in punitive damages.

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" has spent the past 16 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is now tied for the longest consecutive time at the number one spot, with only two other songs holding the record.

He recently dropped another remix, this time with RM of the K-pop band BTS.
