Wiz Khalifa Sues Record Label And Former Manager For $1 Million

He wants to be young, wild and free of his contract.

Hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa is suing his label and his former manager in hopes of terminating the deal he signed with them more than a decade ago, Rolling Stone reports.

The "Young, Wild and Free" artist says Rostrum Records and its creator Benjy Grinberg regularly introduced him to business ventures that had far more benefits for them than they did for him.

"During the period that Grinberg and Rostrum acted as (Khalifa's) personal mangers, they induced (him) to enter into a series of transactions in which Grinberg and Rostrum placed their own interests over (his)," the lawsuit states.

Khalifa, who worked with Grinberg from 2005 to 2014, also states that his managers often failed to provide him with the necessary information to make his own sound business decisions and accused them of self-dealing.

In one specific example, Khalifa brings up the one-album contract he signed with Warner Music that featured five options for additional albums.

In addition to wanting out of his contract, the 28-year-old artist is seeking $1 million, plus punitive damages and legal fees.

Grinberg, for his part, vehemently denied Khalifa's claims and said he is surprised to receive a lawsuit from the rapper he signed out of Pittsburgh at the ripe age of 16.

"To witness an artist turn on you after supporting them for a number of years is very disheartening," Grinberg said in a statement. "This is an egregious lawsuit filled with inaccuracies, yet unfortunately people sometimes resort to these practices as a way of conducting business."

But the rapper's lawyer, Alex Weingarten, is preaching a far different tune.

"An artist's most trusted advisor is his or her personal manager," the attorney told Variety. "Generally, nothing good comes out when the manager decides to go into business against his artist. Unfortunately, that is the case here."
