Tommy Davidson Says He Almost Got Into A Fight With Will Smith Over Jada

Comedian Tommy Davidson confesses that he nearly got beaten up by Will Smith on the set of the 1998 movie “Woo.”

In Davidson’s new memoir “Living in Color,” he writes about co-starring in the romantic comedy opposite Will’s now-wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Davidson and Jada got along very well on set and had many heart-to-heart conversations.

The “In Living Color” star writes that he told Jada that he was dissatisfied with the film’s original ending, as were the producers. During a phone call with Jada on the line, he told them about his idea: to have his and Jada’s characters dance as the credits roll. Everyone enthusiastically agreed that this was a better ending than the one planned, he writes.

Although Davidson had discussed with a producer the idea of also kissing the “Girls Trip” star, he hadn’t mentioned it to her.

“I didn’t know this: You have to rehearse a kiss,” he writes. “You can’t just spring it on your costar … And I didn’t think it was all that big of a deal.”

Davidson says while filming, he went in for a kiss and immediately felt Jada flinch.

Shortly afterwards, Will Smith — who was engaged to Jada at the time and was on the set — stormed into Davidson’s trailer and announced, “I didn’t appreciate that,” Davidson says in the book. Davidson goaded him and the situation quickly became tense.

“Will went all gangsta on me, saying what I did was not cool,” Davidson says in the book. “There was a moment there when we might have come to blows. My reactive fight-or-flight instinct was triggered and I could have exploded.”

Luckily, Jada who had followed Will into the trailer, defused the scene, according to Davidson. (Before the film was released, Jada and Will had wed and she’s billed as Jada Pinkett Smith on the movie).

Davidson goes on to say that the power couple have only been gracious and friendly when they have bumped into each other over the years, and adds that most importantly, Jada’s mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones, a recovering addict, helped him obtain sobriety.
