PROPOSITION 19 MAKES ME WANT TO MOVE TO CALI!

The multibillionaire investor said he supports a California law that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in the state.

"Proposition 19 already is a winner no matter what happens on Election Day," Soros, 80, said in an opinion piece published by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

"The mere fact of its being on the ballot has elevated and legitimized public discourse about marijuana and marijuana policy in ways I could not have imagined a year ago."

But Soros is in the minority.

Although Prop. 19 was initially backed by many Californians, polls indicate support to legalize cannabis has been slipping. According to a recent Los Angeles Times/USC survey, 51% of voters said they were against the measure, while to 39% were for it. The state passed its medical marijuana bill 14 years ago.

According to the Times, Soros will donate $1 million to help pass Prop. 19. He has previously invested $3 million in the medical marijuana initiative and two other measures.

Soros, who has argued for legalizing medical marijuana for nearly two decades, argued decriminalizing the drug would bring much-needed revenue for the cash-strapped state, in addition to lowering crime.

"Regulating and taxing marijuana would simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars in enforcement and incarceration costs, while providing many billions of dollars in revenue annually," he said.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has strongly condemned the measure, arguing its passage would complicate drug enforcement efforts. He insisted that federal authorities would continue to enforce U.S. laws that declare the drug is illegal, even if California voters approve the initiative.

If voters approve the ballot measure, Californians 21 and older will be allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of pot and cultivate the plant on a plot of land up to 25 square feet.
