Nas Performs With The National Symphony Orchestra

Over the years, Nas has had many distinctions. He is the namesake of a Harvard fellowship. He was given BET’s “I Am Hip Hop Award.” His album, Illmatic was chosen to be preserved in Harvard’s library. And, just last week, he was given the Spotlight Award from the New York City Mayor’s Office. Those are just a few of the accolades he’s collected during his illustrious career.

Now, Nas is the beneficiary of another honorific and it is one of his most epic. The Queensbridge MC was invited to perform his classic debut album at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., with the National Symphony Orchestra. Nearly a quarter century after being introduced to the world wearing his jeans and Tims, the elegant MC takes the stage decked out in a dapper tuxedo. Hearing the orchestra play his pieces open them up and showcase the lush musicality that was always present in the productions crafted by DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip and L.E.S.

In addition to performing the album, Nas and others provide commentary about the concert, throughout. The experience truly is illmatic.
