Lizard Squad Takes Credit For Christmas Day Cyber-Attacks On Playstation & Xbox

XBox Live networks were up and running Friday while Sony PlayStation’s platform was still struggling to bounce back following a Christmas Day cyberattack.

The widespread outages dampened Christmas for countless gamers left unable to operate their shiny new gadgets.

The notorious hacker group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for the attack.

XBox Live’s “core services” were “up and running” Friday, but several third-party apps on the platform were experiencing limited service, company officials said.

Sony PlayStation, meanwhile, was still experiencing bugs that prevented an untold number of users from logging into its network.

“Our engineers are continuing to work hard to resolve the network issues users have experienced today,” read a posting on the PlayStation Twitter account. “Thanks for your continued patience!”

Though it came on the same day “The Interview” hit theaters, the Lizard Squad hack appeared unrelated to the Sony cyberattack linked to the controversial film.

Judging by its Twitter feed, Lizard Squad, which has been launching a series of attacks on the video game industry since the summer, is apparently seeking nothing more than online fame.

The group, after launching its latest attack, has been demanding more retweets and followers as ransom.

“I have the nation on strings,” Lizard Squad wrote on its Twitter account Thursday.

It promised to put the game network sites back online if enough people retweeted its messages.

The hack came a week after Lizard Squad threatened to take down the gaming networks of PlayStation and XBox Live over the holidays.

By Friday afternoon, Lizard Squad had turned its attention away from the gaming networks and had started targeting the anonymous communication service Tor Project.

“To clarify, we are no longer attacking PSN or Xbox. We are testing our new Tor 0day,” the hackers tweeted.

Thanks Lizard Squad for being the Grinch that stole Christmas for alot of kids …...

They were all staring at the screen like …..
