IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

A Long Island doctor who doled out phony prescriptions for painkillers later sold on city streets was sentenced to three years behind bars Thursday.
Dr. Michael Chait, dubbed a "doctor-turned-dealer" by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, allegedly charged Medicaid patients from the five boroughs $200 cash for Oxycontin and other narcotic prescriptions.

The patients, up to 50 a day often bused in to his Amangansett office from the city, used their Medicaid cards to fill the precriptions and sell the drugs on the black market.

Chait pleaded guilty to drug possession, conspiracy and grand larceny charges in April.

Investigators said Chait, described by a Drug Enforcement Administration agent as "the ultimate stop for 'doctor shoppers,'" didn't even examine his patients but let them have up to five refills.

The scheme was uncovered after city pharmacies began noticing hundreds of bogus prescriptions just as police in East Hampton got suspicious about the busloads of people arriving at Chait's office in the tony East End hamlet.
