A petition launched Wednesday asking iHeartMedia to fire Charlamagne Tha God from “The Breakfast Club” after a woman who accused the popular radio personality of rape 17 years ago said she wanted to re-open the case.
A Care2 petition calling for Charlamagne’s removal, whose real name is Lenard Larry McKelvey, from the program has received over 7,000 signatures since it launched Wednesday.
“We want to send a powerful message to all of the people who like to prey on innocent children that it's not going to happen on our watch!” petitioner Derrick Real wrote.
The petition was prompted by Jessica Reid, who accused McKelvey of rape in 2001, telling The Blast earlier this week that she wanted to revisit the case.
According to a 2001 police report, Reid, 15, attended a party in South Carolina where she was given a drink that “tasted like soda.”
She alleges that she woke up to McKelvey, who was 22 at the time, forcing himself on her.
Reid was taken to a hospital, where it was confirmed she had been sexually assaulted.
McKelvey was arrested in 2001 for "willfully, unlawfully, and feloniously engaging in penile/vaginal intercourse with a fifteen-year-old child minor.”
He was ultimately found guilty on a lesser charge, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, due to underage drinking at the party, TMZ reports.
South Carolina has no statute of limitations for sexual assault cases.
The radio host addressed the incident — and maintained his innocence — in a 2013 interview with DJ Akademiks.
"Charlamagne has spoken about this many times over the years in public, including in his book,” McKelvey’s lawyers told TMZ Thursday. “While Charlamagne has empathy for all sexual assault victims, he cannot take responsibility for a crime he did not commit.”
